Periodontal Disease and Orthodontics

Question:

My dentist insists I should have my periodontal disease treated before I start treating my crooked teeth. You and your dentist informed me that the two problems are related, and it’s best to treat them at the same time. What is your plan based upon?

Answer:

Research shows periodontal disease is significantly more problematic in adult patients with crowded and/or crooked teeth. A recent study found that patients with periodontal and crowding problems can reduce their periodontal problems at a faster rate using a combined orthodontic-periodontic treatment plan. Our office provides dental and orthodontic services all under one roof. This bundling of services makes my office ideal for treating patients needing a combination, multidisciplinary approach to treatment.
