Question:

I have had some financial issues that have caused me to get behind on my payments to another orthodontist. I need to have my son’s braces removed because I can’t afford them at this time. This orthodontist said he won’t remove braces until my bill is paid. What am I to do?

Answer:

First, come to my office to have your son’s braces removed. We typically charge a fee, but if a person can’t pay, we will do the right thing and remove the braces at no charge. When an orthodontist refuses to remove braces until fees are paid, it gives me and the patient the impression that financial gain is more important than the patient’s dental health. I have trouble supporting any orthodontist who practices this way and am really critical of such a practice when the patient is a child.
