Dr. Herman: How to Avoid Tooth Extractions with Braces
Posted on July 14, 2016
Question: I am really stressed out. I went to an orthodontist whose plan was to take out four teeth on my 10 year old son. Yesterday I took my son to an oral surgeon who was going to put him to sleep for the procedure. My son got extremely anxious in the waiting room because he did not want his teeth taken out. He ran out of the office and I could not get him out of the car. What can I do?
Answer: I recommend you get a second opinion from me. It would be rare for me to have a plan to fix your son’s problems that would require extractions. For the last 15 years, I have recommended “premolar extractions” should be avoided, and that almost all patients can be treated without such an invasive procedure of removing four healthy teeth.
